It’s that time of year again…..
As you will no doubt have read, the decision has been made: in my second season in Formula 1 I will be driving for Force India F1. I’m already looking forward to the new season with relish.
There had been a good deal of rumour about which team I would be joining. Even Mercedes McLaren’s name cropped up a few times. It was quite an honour to be mentioned in the same breath as one of the top teams. Other teams were also mentioned.
I wouldn’t want to comment on any of that and I didn’t really give it a thought. I know my manager spoke to other teams and that there was interest in principle. But now I have a contract with Force India F1 which I will fulfill in 2008. I’m sure my chance to join a top team will come. I’ll do everything I can in my second season so that other doors will open and hopefully I can attract the interest of other teams.
The talks with new owner Vijay Mallya were very good. Everything he said made sense and I got the impression that he was serious about Formula 1. He wants to develop the team and the medium term goal is to be among the points.
On the other hand we can’t expect miracles and have to take things one step at a time. The first target is to be established in the middle of the field and avoid starting on the last row of the grid. I’m glad that Colin Kolles is still part of the team as he is an important and close contact.
Next Thursday in Bombay the lid will be lifted on who my team mate will be. I know already, but I can’t reveal him yet. Let’s just say I’m looking forward to joining up with a fast and experienced driver...
On 16th January I will be finally back at the wheel. That’s what I’m looking forward to the most. Although it was enjoyable to relax for a few weeks without any tests or races, I’m feeling quite restless now and am itching to get back in the seat. I’ve had my fill of PR events and fitness training – now let the season begin!
